Pioneers Who Settled in Comanche County Before
the Civil War, Having Lived Here Half a Century
Reprinted from the Comanche Chief and Pioneer Exponent, 31 January 1913
One of the most notable gatherings ever held in this section, if not in Texas, occurred several days since when a number of pioneers who settled here before the war, and who have lived here better than a half century, some of them belong to wrest this grand and glorious country from the savage red man, and claim it for civilization, met and had their pictures made in a group for the purpose of preserving it, and their memory to future generations. Too much in praise of these rugged pioneers cannot be said. They are our best citizenship, and much is due them for the success of Comanche and Comanche county. Most of the gentlemen in this picture have reached their “three score and ten” but all are hale and hearty, robust of mind and body. In the above picture beginning with top row, left side they are as follows
[1] Kin McKinsey, [2] James Cunningham, [3] Tom Edwards, [4] Lee Campbell, [5] Frank Watson, [6] Jack Isham, [7] Poke Hester, [8] Joel Nabers, [9] Charles McKinsey, [10] Will Cunningham, [11] David Cunningham, Sr., [12] Dick Cunningham, [13] George Janes, [14] D. Pendergrass, [15] John Watson, [16] Clate Carnes, [17] Tom Holcomb, [18] Jack Wright, [19] Aaron Cunningham, [20] Mart Fleming, [21] James Barcroft.
