The First Methodist Episcopal Church, at Cortland, Cortland County, New York, as photographed ca. 1907.

The village of Cortland's first known Methodist Episcopal congregation — consisting of twenty persons — met at the home of Jonathan Hubbard. The earliest regular attendees were Jonathan Hubbard, Mary Hubbard, James Hubbard, Abigail Hubard, Elijah Batchelor, Martha Batchelor, Isaac Bassett, Polly Bassett, William Bassett, and Catherine Sherwood. The first church building was completed and dedicated in 1823.*
