947 New Jerseyites, Pennsylvanians,
and New Yorkers in 1808
Reprinted from American Genealogy Magazine, Vol. 7, No. 5, pp. 19-29
Charles Drelincourt’s Consolations de l'âme fidèle contre les frayeurs de la mort was published in France in 1651. Among the English translations was The Christian’s Defence Against the Fears of Death, including a reprint in New Jersey by James Oram in 1808. A bookseller and newspaper publisher, Oram financed the volume’s printing by accepting subscriptions. At the back of the book, he acknowledged those subscribers by publishing the name and residence—all 947 of those New Jerseyites, Pennsylvanians, and New Yorkers.
