The compiler has alphabetically arrange about 20,000 testators, the name of the county, and the designation of the will book, so that a copy of the will can be obtained. This book concerns the early surviving will books of Georgia counties, which were formed before the 1832 Land Lottery. This index was compiled from microfilmed copies of the county will books and copies of wills made by the clerk, who entered verbatim copies in the will books. The author reminds the reader that in the latter case, the spellings are based upon the clerk’s interpretation. As the Georgia State Archives maintains an index to the estate records of Chatham, the compiler chose not to index the wills of this county.
