Overlooked Facts About the Meadors of Colonial Virginia & Beyond

The intent in writing this book is not to regurgitate everything that has been written although there will be some repetition. It is to offer a different perspective of the records and those cited have been personally searched and analyzed by the author. In doing so, it has resulted in very different conclusions from those which have been so widely accepted.

The source most widely quoted for the ancestry of John Meador (d. 1721, Essex County, Virginia) is Our Meador Families of Colonial America by Victor P. Meador and Bernal M. Meador. In depth research has uncovered overlooked details and different interpretations of records. The primary focus is the ancestry of John Meador (d. 1721) and descendants through his son Richard and Ann Mess. (Generally, her surname has been read as “Moss.”) Information is included on some other descendants but only those on which more or differing interpretations have come to light.

Every effort has been made to spell the surnames and copy the records as shown in the record books. Transcripts which were created in the County Clerk’s Office will be noted as (CH Transcript) so one can identify the book from which the document was taken. But that isn’t always possible. Keep in mind that the books from the 1600s have most likely been recopied several times so there is room for clerical errors. Also, some of the films do not designate whether it is a transcript. When there is more than one copy of a film they may or may not be the same because one is a recopy (transcript). If the book and pages sourced within these pages don’t give you the desired results, keep checking for another book of the same number.

It is hoped that this information will shed light on interaction between allied families which have not been identified, researched, or linked with the Meadors.
